GREENWICH - A fire at the Old Greenwich Gables condo complex forced 30 residents from their Forrest Avenue homes Tuesday evening.

Investigators say the fire started at the base of the building where construction workers were using a torch that morning. The flames spread quickly all the way to the roof, destroying three units and damaging several others, fire officials say.

According to firefighters, the sprinklers located in the living areas failed to go off in time because the fire spread in between the walls and floors.

Officials say three firefighters were hurt battling the flames.
