GREENWICH - A Greenwich jewelry store owner says he is paying nearly $100,000 a year to have a police officer stand outside his store after it was ransacked by robbers last November.

According to Terry Betteridge, who owns Betteridge Jewelers on Greenwich Avenue, the high price for security is necessary because the town eliminated the officer who used to stand guard on the nearby corner.

Betteridge says it's sad that businesses are forced to pay for their own protection when they pay so much in taxes. He says some of his employees have also been armed with Tasers.
