STAMFORD - A Stamford gym accused of taking membership fees out of a dead man's bank account for almost two years will refund his family.

Gregory Rowell's mother, Patricia, says Planet Fitness automatically withdrew $15 a month after Rowell was shot to death in 2007. Patricia Rowell says she didn't realize her son had the account until a bank employee who knows her noticed the charges last month.

Rowell contacted the gym to ask for a $400 refund but was told by branch management she could have a six-month membership instead. A Planet Fitness spokesman contacted Rowell Wednesday to apologize and tell her she'd be refunded $1,500 and the gym will make a donation to the Yerwood Center, where Rowell practiced dance.
