GREENWICH - Greenwich town officials say they are consulting with the state Department of Health after high levels of arsenic were found at a school property.

Officials say it could affect plans to build temporary classrooms on the grounds of Western Middle School. Modular classrooms for more than 200 students from the New Lebanon School are planned to be set up at the site while the new school is being built next year.

The state has a limit of 10 milligrams per kilogram for arsenic in residentially owned areas, officials say. However, while there were slightly higher levels at the property, officials say it is well below 150 milligrams per kilogram, which would require the state to be alerted to the findings.

Residents are told that there is no need to be immediately alarmed.

Officials say no other contaminants were found in the soil. They say they hope to receive a response from the Department of Health within the coming weeks.
