BRIDGEPORT - Members of a historical society in Bridgeport say they're upset that a home, built in the 1800s, collapsed this past weekend.

The property is located near the corner of Fairfield and Clinton avenues.

Bridgeport officials say the owners were denied a request to tear down the house to build a mosque, and they were doing excavation work near the site.

Residents of the Stratfield Historic District say the city should have preserved the building. They say the owners "put holes in the roof... removed the windows ... and started removing the foundation."

The city says a building inspector is investigating the collapse.
