Holiday honors administrative assistants

NORWALK - Administrative assistants across southwestern Connecticut and the country are being celebrated this week for their hard work.

The holiday, previously known as Secretary's Week, has been providing a boost in business for flower shop owners, many of whom are stuck in the doldrums between Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.

Although Wednesday has been a busier day than usual for Sandra Harris, who runs Bruce's Flowers in Norwalk, she says business isn't what it used to be.

"It was almost as busy as Mother's Day because more people thought of their secretaries than they did [of] their moms, unfortunately," she says. "But now it's just way down."

Harris believes the slowdown in sales is related to the renaming of the holiday from Secretary's Week to Assistant Professional's Week, which made bosses care less.

Officials say there are over 4 million administrative professionals in the United States, and since the beginning of the economic downturn, many of them have been taking on managerial responsibilities.
