NORWALK - Support is growing for a homeless woman who was arrested for allegedly enrolling her son in a Norwalk elementary school by using a friend's address.

Both the local and state branches of the NAACP have offered Tanya McDowell legal help, saying that she was looking for the best education for her son.

The city of Norwalk has charged McDowell with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny for allegedly stealing more than $15,000 from Norwalk schools.

The Norwalk School District says McDowell's son attended Brookside Elementary from Sept. 2010-Jan. 2011.

In a statement sent to News 12 Connecticut, the district said McDowell testified in Norwalk Housing Court that she and her son actually lived at 66 Priscilla Circle in Bridgeport. She did not testify at the time that she was homeless.

McDowell will be arraigned tomorrow at State Superior Court in Norwalk.
