HARTFORD - Hundreds of state troopers rallied at the capitol today in a down-to-the-wire effort to save jobs they say are crucial to protecting public safety.

The state police union is protesting the potential layoffs of 56 state troopers, slated to take effect on Aug. 24.

The layoffs were planned after the troopers' union voted down a concession package put forth by Gov. Dan Malloy (D-CT). The governor's deal would have included a two-year wage freeze.

At today's rally, troopers said the state police union has already made its fair share of sacrifices. The union voted in 2009 to accept a zero-wage increase contract. Another wage freeze would leave troopers without raises for four straight years.

Eleven of the 56 positions on the chopping block would come from Troop G, based in southwestern Connecticut.Governor's budget director: State layoffs on holdState workers approve concessions deal
