BRIDGEPORT - Hundreds of parents, teachers and students packed Dunbar Elementary School in Bridgeport tonight, demanding that school officials reconsider a proposal to close its doors.

According to Superintendent John Ramos, shutting down the school would help the district close a $19 million budget gap. He said turning the classrooms into administrative offices would save $1.6 million.

School officials say that even if the proposal goes through, the district will still face a $17 million shortfall, which could result in as many as 400 layoffs.

The board is now expected to conduct an impact study on transitioning the school. Another public hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday night.
