ICE agents arrest dozens of illegal immigrants in Connecticut

CONNECTICUT - Officials say a massive nationwide federal roundup of illegal immigrants netted dozens of alleged criminals in southwestern Connecticut.

Authorities say Operation Cross Check, a seven-day national raid, led to the arrests of more than 2,900 people who were living in the U.S. illegally.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 111 immigrants in New England and 23 in southwestern Connecticut, all with prior convictions.

ICE says it targeted those charged or convicted of homicide, rape, robbery, kidnapping or major drug offenses.

Stamford immigration attorney Philip Berns says he's pleased the Obama administration is shifting its strategy and going after convicted criminal aliens, rather than busting immigrants working hard to become citizens.

The Department of Homeland Security has been criticized for using fingerprints collected in local jails to deport immigrants arrested for minor offenses, such as traffic violations.
