Incumbent Chris Shays defeated in bid for re-election

NORWALK - Republican incumbent Chris Shays was defeated Tuesday in his bid for re-election in the 4th Congressional District.

With 93 percent of the precincts reporting, Democrat Jim Himes has defeated Shays. In his concession speech, Shays thanked his wife for enduring 34 years in politics. He says he felt that he would win the race. He says his one regret was hoping that a positive campaign and a good record would have led him to victory. "We lost this race because we had a tsunami that was on its way," he says.

Shays was in office for 10 terms before being defeated by the political newcomer. Himes, a former vice president at Goldman Sachs, had hit his opponent for "not understanding the economy" and said he had a better handle on global economics.
