WESTPORT - Many out-of-work southwestern Connecticut residents turned out in Westport Tuesday hoping to land jobs as census takers.

Census officials were at town hall holding tests for 2010 census job seekers.

The door-to-door census takers make about $23 an hour. Officials say they're seeing a high turnout of job seekers due to the recession.

Applicants must pass a test with questions ranging from math to geography.

Some applicants could also be considered for permanent jobs with the Census Bureau.

People interested in applying should call the Bridgeport Regional Census Office at 203-993-8030.
