WESTPORT - A Connecticut company wants consumers to rent chickens for a chance at cooking with fresh eggs every morning.

Connecticut Rent-A-Hen says the idea is becoming very popular. Its representatives visited the Westport Farmers Market Thursday to tout the product.

Owner John Farrugia says he came across the idea in another state and has since grown his business to include around 60 customers.

He says consumers can rent three hens and a chicken coop for a three-month minimum — or more with an option to buy.

Three hens produce between four and six dozen eggs a month, he says. He also says they make great pets.

It requires a $150 down payment and then $54 a month.

Farrugia also says people interested in the program should check with their local laws to make sure having hens is allowed.
