BRIDGEPORT - An 18-year-old man was sentenced on Friday at the Fairfield County Courthouse for shooting the mother of his child.

Jonathan Poulard was sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting his now ex-girlfriend in the leg in 2010.

Doeava Barret says that she is satisfied with the sentencing, and she is finally able to start moving on with her life. She says when Poulard came to the house to see his son on the day of the shooting, she took cover in the bathroom, but he broke the door open and shot her.

Poulard pleaded guilty to assault in the first degree and carrying a pistol without a permit. When asked if he had any remarks, Poulard declined.

The mother of the victim says she is relieved that the ordeal is over, and she is happy that her daughter is now safe. Barret told News 12 Connecticut off-camera that the mental pain the incident caused her has been more difficult to overcome than the physical.
