MILFORD - Elected officials and veterans gathered today to commemorate the Milford Nike Ajax Missile Base with a bronze plaque that was thought to be lost years ago.

The plaque was posted on the base when it was erected in 1957, but the plaque was stolen when the base was decommissioned.

The person who stole the plaque eventually turned it over to veteran Eric Muth, which prompted today's gathering.

In addition to recommissioning the old plaque, veterans installed a new one next to it to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the site's closing.

The base was once considered one of the first lines of defense in the event of an attack.
