MILFORD - The state Department of Motor Vehicles said lines are much shorter Wednesday following more than a week of huge backlogs caused by conversion to a new computer system.

The DMV shut down four of its satellite licensing centers Tuesday, in response to the overwhelming crowds showing up to larger DMV offices.

At the AAA in Milford, which has been handling some of the overflow, workers said they were expecting a lot more people Wednesday, but they too have been pleasantly surprised with the shorter lines.

DMV leaders said transaction times have dropped an average of three minutes statewide as workers get more comfortable with a new computer system.

The DMV said 32 percent of people coming into locations can actually do their business online, on the DMV's new website.
