FAIRFIELD - Although Connecticut was spared a direct hit by Hurricane Joaquin, local experts say the preparations people made were not wasted.

The Citizens Emergency Response Team members say the drills they executed in preparation of Hurricane Joaquin provided them with an essential chance to prepare the community for future emergencies.

Norma Peterson, a member of Fairfield's CERT, says with the impending cold weather, no emergency preparation by the public is ever wasted.

"It was productive for us as well because we had to go through the procedure of calling out people, setting up shifts and things like that, which only helps us be ready for a real emergency," says Peterson.

Fairfield Police tell News 12 Connecticut that the past week of efforts will inevitably pay off with hurricane season lasting through the end of November.
