STRATFORD - Stratford Mayor John Harkins say he'll void a contract to sell Long Beach West to the federal government.

Voters had approved a deal to sell the land to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for $10 million in November 2008.

Harkins says the land is no longer worth that much money, so it is no longer in the town's interest to sell the land for what would be a smaller sum than voters approved.

Former Mayor Jim Miron, who was a strong supporter of the sale, says the deal was about more than money and was also designed to preserve the land as open space without the town having to foot the bill.
