BRIDGEPORT - A Bridgeport man accused of setting his puppy on fire appeared before a judge Thursday.

Donovan Brooks, 21, has been charged with reckless burning and cruelty to animals for having two of his other dogs tied up with chains while he was allegedly setting fire to his puppy at Clover Field Dec. 5.

Officers say Brooks told them the dog had died earlier, and he didn't know what to do with it. If it is determined the puppy was alive when it was burned, Brooks could face additional charges.

On Thursday, the judge gave Brooks six weeks to find an attorney. Brooks is due back in court Jan. 28.
