Man arrested after 7-hour standoff in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT - Bridgeport police say a 43-year-old man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly held his wife and four children hostage in their home during a seven-hour standoff with authorities.

Reynaldo Santiago was arrested about 1 a.m. Tuesday and has been charged with risk of injury to minors, unlawful restraint, criminal mischief and interfering with an officer. He was arraigned late Tuesday afternoon.

Bridgeport police surrounded the home at 56 Hudson St., evacuated residents and closed off several blocks Monday night. They were able to get the spouse and four children out about three hours later, but Santiago remained inside.

"We had a long evening in terms of trying to negotiate and then trying to figure out exactly where he was in the home," says Chief Bryan Norwood of the Bridgeport Police Department. "Ultimately, the state police were able to retrieve him from the home without any incident."

Bridgeport police say Santiago is a Gulf War veteran and has a history of mental-health and drug issues. He is expected back in court in two weeks.
