BRIDGEPORT - A Bridgeport man who allegedly brandished a knife toward police is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by officers.

Police say Michael Stinson, 35, was trying to break into a car last night on Atlantic Street, near the University of Bridgeport, at around 9 p.m.

When police tried to stop him, Stinson allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened officers. Bridgeport Police Chief Joseph Gaudett says the officers tried to use pepper spray and a Taser to stop Stinson, but that he kept coming at them.

Gaudett released a statement today saying that the shooting seems to be completely justified. State police are now handling the investigation.
