GREENWICH - Family members of a Greenwich woman killed by her former father-in-law were outraged when he was convicted of only manslaughter Friday.

A three-judge panel chose the lesser charge instead of murder for Gerardo Lombardi in the death of Alison McKnight.

Lombardi claimed he was only trying to scare McKnight when he repeatedly shot and stabbed her during a dispute over a piece of property.

In their decision, the judges called it a savage killing but said the 77-year-old man was not emotionally stable at the time of the attack.
