NORWALK - Skyrocketing gas prices are hurting bottom lines in Connecticut, but presidential candidate John McCain says he may have a temporary solution.

AAA says Connecticut?s gas prices are up 16 cents from last month, a record high. The average for a gallon of regular gas is now $3.48. At a Shell station on Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk, drivers are paying $3.69 a gallon.

To relieve some of the pain at the pump, Sen. McCain is calling for a suspension of the federal gasoline tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Some drivers say a temporary fix just won?t suffice. They add that a short-term fix won?t do anything to repair the economy?s overall problems.

Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.) agrees that a temporary fix is not what the state and the country needs. ?While I will keep an open mind about the proposal, I have reservations about suspending the federal tax on fuel because one of the inconvenient truths our country is facing is a deteriorating infrastructure that needs to be rebuilt,? Shays says.
