NORWALK - Metro-North officials held public hearings today in Stamford to give commuters a chance to speak out against proposed fare increases. Officials say riders will likely have to pay additional 15 percent for train tickets, as well as a separate 1.25-percent boost to pay for new rail cars. Connecticut Rail Commuter Council Chairman Jim Cameron says the possible fare hikes could be too pricey for daily commuters.

"We're not talking about one ride and one person paying a couple more bucks a day," he says. "We're talking about monthly commuters who are already paying $300 a month." All changes are expected to go into effect Nov. 1. The hearing was at UConn's Stamford campus. Another hearing is set for tomorrow in New Haven.
