DARIEN - Officials say an equipment malfunction left a packed MTA train stuck on the tracks in Darien, delaying 500 people for more than an hour early Saturday morning.

The breakdown occurred at around 2 a.m. at the Noroton Heights Metro-North station. The train was coming from Grand Central Station in New York City.

Travelers say at one point there was no power on the train, leaving them stuck in the dark with no circulating air.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal says the breakdown renews bad memories of earlier problems for Metro-North.

“People are losing patience with this railroad and so am I,” said Sen. Blumenthal. “The results unfortunately indicate there is still a gap in performance, in reliability, which will undermine trust and confidence.”

A spokesman for Metro-North says riders were transferred to a second train on an adjacent track to complete their trip. They say much of the hour-long delay was caused by the slow process of getting people off the train because only one door reached the platform.
