MILFORD - Milford's Board of Education voted tonight to close Simon Lake Elementary School.

Officials say the closure is necessary to bridge a budget gap of about $2.2 million.

Before the vote, parents voiced their concerns about the closure for more than two hours during a public comment session. Now that the closure has been approved, 30 teachers could be laid off and redistricting will take place.

To accommodate students, the elementary schools will be split into four kindergarten through second-grade schools and four third-grade through fifth-grade schools.
