MILFORD - A Milford father is accused of drunkenly leaving his 15-month-old child alone in a house.

Jason DeMonte, 31, appeared before a judge Monday after being charged with risk of injury to a minor.

Police say they found DeMonte when they responded to reports of an intoxicated male talking to himself and roaming near Melba Street and Beachland Avenue at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. During their investigation, they say they found a toddler in a crib inside DeMonte's house, with the door wide open.

Officers say DeMonte appeared intoxicated walking down his driveway. They say he claimed he was gone only a short time to get cigarettes and stopped off at a local bar, but he denied drinking there.

Police say his toddler was alone for at least an hour while the child's mother was at work.

A judge reduced DeMonte's bail from $75,000 to $25,000 and referred him for alcohol and substance abuse counseling. The judge also issued protective orders that remain in effect while the case is pending and said DeMonte is to be supervised during his visits with the child.
