Milford kids, parents rally to save teachers' jobs

Almost 200 Milford teachers were put on notice their jobs may be in jeopardy due to budget cuts, which brought protesters of all ages out

MILFORD - Almost 200 Milford teachers were put on notice their jobs may be in jeopardy due to budget cuts, which brought protesters of all ages out to a public hearing Wednesday night.

All 180 of the school district?s non-tenured teachers received pink slips. If the proposed budget passes, the schools superintendent says there may be no choice but to let some of the teachers go.

Hundreds of students and parents packed Milford City Hall, including 11-year-old Katie Kurata who wrote a speech in support of her teacher for the occasion. Other students and parents delivered comments as well.

The superintendent says the district is dealing with a $2.1 million shortfall and because staffing makes up 80 percent of the budget, he saw no way around the pink slips. Wednesday?s meeting was the only public hearing before next month?s budget vote.
