MILFORD - Some Milford students are hoping to get the date of their graduation ceremony changed.
Jonathan Law High School is set to hold its commencement on June 10. That date will be one year to the day that Laura Gonzalez took her own life.
Senior Katie Sabo started an online petition to get the Milford Board of Education to change the date of graduation.
Katie Sabo says her classmates are still trying to cope with the loss of Gonzalez.
She says she first appealed to Milford's superintendent, Dr. Elizabeth Feser.
"She didn't think it was necessary to change graduation because it would be a day to honor Laura, but I don't think that's the case," says Sabo.
As of Monday, the petition had more than 800 signatures.
Sabo says she hopes the petition will convince the school board to change the date so the day can be a happy occasion instead of a sad one.
"When you have so many people in the class avidly against graduating on June 10, it's not an honor anymore, it's an issue that needs to be addressed," says Sabo.
News 12 reached out to the superintendent’s office, but was told Dr. Feser will be out of town for the rest of the week and is unable to comment.
Sabo says she plans to bring her petition to the school board meeting on Monday, April 25.
