Most Bridgeport students return to school

BRIDGEPORT - Thousands of Bridgeport students returned to the classroom today after getting a delayed start to the school year because of Hurricane Irene.

The district was supposed to start classes on Monday, but instead, power outages extended summer vacation by two days. Many parents say school supplies were a challenge to get with many stores not immediately open after the storm.

School officials say Irene only added to the list of changes taking effect in Bridgeport, including a new school board, an altered uniform requirement and budget cutbacks.

Other districts across southwestern Connecticut also had to delay the first day, but officials in Darien and New Canaan say they'll reopen Thursday.
