STRATFORD - This week marks 20 years since a 13-year-old from Stratford was killed by a drunken driver while visiting Disney World in Florida.

Alice Carter, the mother of 13-year-old Danny Carter, witnessed the accident. She says that she was in Florida with her son to celebrate her 40th birthday when a woman who had been driving drunk ran over her son and killed him.

Twenty years later, she wants to build awareness about the importance of preventing drunken driving.

Carter testified before state lawmakers and helped to get a law passed that requires a device to be installed in the cars of convicted drunken drivers to prevent them from getting on the road intoxicated.

"Because of my involvement with MADD, honestly, I think that saved my life," Carter says. MADD, or Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is a nationwide nonprofit organization that aims to stop drunken driving and supports those affected by it.

The upcoming "Fairfield County Walk Like MADD" will be dedicated to Danny. The walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Fairfield Ludlowe High School.
