NORWALK - Authorities say a National Guardsman was safely transferred to the hospital for psychological evaluation last night following a standoff with police outside of his Norwalk home.

According to officials, they were called to the scene on Ledgebrook Drive at around 10 p.m. after two of the man's friends tipped them off that he had admitted to having suicidal thoughts.

Authorities say the man locked himself inside his home with several rifles nearby and was seen pacing back and forth. They say it took about an hour for the man's two friends, also National Guardsmen, to get him to come outside.

Neighbors say he is a great man who recently returned from combat missions in Iraq.
