FAIRFIELD - Officials say the death toll is approaching 4,000 people from Saturday’s devastating earthquake in Nepal.

The United Nations says it is releasing $15 million from its Central Emergency Response fund to help disaster relief efforts.

Nepal natives in southwestern Connecticut are trying to help their stranded families by raising money to send back home, and relief workers from the area are already on the ground there

Brad Kerner, of Fairfield, is part of the Save the Children organization. He survived the earthquake Saturday and has spent the last two nights sleeping outside in Kathmandu.

"On the sidewalks, on the streets, in open tarps.  Every park, people are making their own -- some sort of shelter," he said

Kerner says Nepal desperately needs temporary housing and medical supplies, as well as food and clean water. He also says that landslides are keeping crews from reaching outlying villages.
