HARTFORD - Parts of Connecticut's new stricter gun laws take effect today.

People can start applying for new credentials to purchase long guns and ammunition.

Those credentials will eventually be required to buy ammo, rifles and shotguns.

Also, anyone who has been involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility will have to wait longer to obtain a gun permit.

The statewide firearms trafficking task force is charged with enforcing the new law.
