NORWALK - The Commerce Department has good news for the housing market in southwestern Connecticut.

According to the Commerce Department, sales of new homes are up 27 percent from last month, the largest monthly increase in 47 years. Analysts are attributing the result to the good weather and a tax credit that ends in seven days.

The tax credit gives first-time qualified buyers $8,000 off their tax bill. Single buyers are allowed to make up to $125,000 and married couples filing jointly can make up to $225,000.
