WESTPORT - Westport officials are warning people about a new law limiting bamboo set to take effect statewide in October.

It requires people who plant fresh bamboo to keep it at least 100 feet from the property line.

Bamboo is considered an invasive species that can easily spread.

There are specific steps people can take if they want to plant closer to property lines.

Residents will be liable if the plants spread to a neighbor's yard.
