BRIDGEPORT - Newly elected state Rep. Christina Ayala was arraigned today on charges related to a domestic dispute incident with her boyfriend.

Bridgeport police arrested Ayala last night at her home on Hillside Avenue. They say she slapped her boyfriend, 37-year-old Pedro Rodriguez-Ortiz, after confronting him over allegations he cheated on her.

Authorities say Ayala denied slapping her boyfriend and told officers she didn't want police involved because of who she was. However, both she and Rodriguez-Ortiz were arrested for breaching the peace.

As for Ayala's role in the Legislature, fellow lawmakers say they do not want to speculate on how her arrest would impact her reputation.

Ayala is scheduled to appear in court later this month on separate hit-and-run charges from last August.
