NOROTON - The Noroton Volunteer Fire Department christened a state-of-the-art truck that can pump up to 1,500 gallons of water per minute.

Officials say the new Engine 31 was custom-built over the course of three years, and funded in part by the Town of Darien.

Firefighters say it was a milestone for the department.

"This truck will serve our town for the next 20-plus years, and as a result of that we think that this truck will be a centerpiece for our fire department for a long time to come," says Chief Jim O'Brien, of the Noroton Fire Department.

The new truck replaces the current Engine 31, which has been in service since 1972.

Officials say the older truck will still be used for backup support in emergencies.
