Norwalk announces steps to combat violent crime

NORWALK - A press conference was held in Norwalk Monday to address the city's response to a recent rash of violent crimes.

Police say they've responded to nearly 10 violent crime scenes in the city in recent weeks. Those incidents include shooting, stabbing and assault cases.

Authorities are partially blaming the crimes on gang activity. Three officers have been reassigned to focus on gang issues in response.

Police say they also intend to increase patrols in targeted areas.

Mayor Dick Moccia says the city is addressing the problem before it gets out of hand.

"There should be a concern, but I don't think there should be a constant drum beat that Norwalk is an unsafe city."

Moccia says he is investigating the legality of enforcing curfews at the city's housing projects.
