Norwalk DPW gets equipment ready for snow

NORWALK - Local cities and towns are preparing their equipment to deal with Friday?s snowfall, which is expected to create slippery road conditions for drivers.

Final preparations are under way at Norwalk?s Department of Public Works ahead of the storm?s arrival. Workers stacked salt in piles, which will eventually be loaded onto trucks.

Norwalk DPW Superintendent Chris Okafor says his crews will hit the roads before sunrise to apply a saline pre-treatment solution on major and secondary roads. Okafor says the solution is meant to prevent hazardous driving conditions.

?This way when the snow comes, it serves as a blanket so it?s easier for vehicular traffic to go through,? Okafor says.

Okafor adds that crews will continue to reapply the solution on the same streets several times during the day.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is also preparing for the snow. State crews have already applied a pre-treatment solution ahead of the storm.

DOT officials say since the crews use salt with liquid calcium chloride, they can make the applications days ahead of bad weather. According to DOT officials, once the precipitation hits the ground, the solutions activate to prevent accumulation.
