NORWALK - An anti-poverty agency based in Norwalk announced deep cuts on Friday that will leave dozens of employees without work.

Officials with Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now say 30 employees will be furloughed, dropping their work week from five days down to four, while 15 will be laid off permanently.

Interim Director Chiquita Stephenson says it was not easy making the cuts, but that she had to take drastic measures to save the agency.

"My focal point was how do we continue to move the organization forward to provide the most needed services to our most vulnerable population," says Stephenson.

Critics say prior mismanagement led to the crisis.

Stephenson says the furloughs will remain in effect for the foreseeable future.
