NORWALK - The Norwalk community mourned the loss of two residents Monday evening after a mother and daughter were killed in a car crash that seriously injured a third family member.

Police say Ledell Mulvaney and her daughter Katherine died in a four-car collision in Westchester over the weekend. They say the car was heading southbound on the Taconic Parkway in New York when a car from the oncoming lane went airborne and crashed into them.

Nathanial Yordin, a friend of the family, says Don and Ledell Mulvaney were driving back from church camp in Sharon, where they taught for 38 years, when the accident occurred.

Ledell's husband and Katherine's father, Don Mulvaney, were hospitalized and in critical condition, according to officials.

Yondin says Don Mulvaney is in a medically induced coma with brain damage and broken bones.

Yordin says the Mulvaneys moved to Brooklyn nine years ago, but still had ties to the Norwalk community, especially with the First Congregational Church. The church held a vigil for the Mulvaneys Monday evening.

He says the entire family was musical. Don was a jazz drummer who taught the genre to school children and played around Fairfield County and New York City. His daughter Katherine was a talented singer and song writer.

Yordin says Don's son, Devan, who was also at the camp, was not in the car with the family during the accident because he drove back separately.
