NORWALK - Norwalk police sponsored National Night Out at Ryan Park in South Norwalk to help fight crime in the community.

Police say it's an area they are often called to for robberies and shootings.

Community organizer Martha Dumas says people must abandon the idea of not talking to police or they risk giving in to those who rule the neighborhoods with fear and violence.

Police Sgt. Shawn Wong Won says there are ways for police to make themselves more accessible in unfriendly neighborhoods. He says officers are more approachable on foot, rather than driving down streets.
