Norwalk rail crossing repairs to close part of Route 1

NORWALK - A section of Route 1 between Wilton Avenue and Hoyt Street in Norwalk will be closed beginning tomorrow as part of a project to modernize an outdated railroad crossing.Local business owners say they are concerned that the shutdown of the road, which is expected to last through next Wednesday, will impact their bottom line. Deparmtent of Transportations (DOT) officials say they will post signs on the Route 7 North connector instructing drivers to use exit 2 instead of exit 1, and then follow the detour signs. The DOT says southbound traffic on Route 1 will be rerouted onto Main Street beginning at the intersection of Main and Cross streets. There will also be a pedestrian detour at Belden Avenue and Hoyt Street. While local residents question whether the repair work will be completed in five days, officials say they are determined to stick to the schedule. State officials are urging people to build extra time into their commutes to allow for delays.
