Norwalk resident set to row for the gold in Beijing

NORWALK - The opening ceremony for the 29th Summer Olympic Games got under way in Beijing Friday with six Connecticut athletes there to chase their dreams of the gold.

Rower Dan Walsh, of Norwalk, will be competing in the men's eight.

Walsh?s family describes the athlete, who started rowing when he was 12 years old, as incredibly dedicated. Part of his training involves rowing three times a day with his team.

It?s not the first time Walsh is at the Olympics; he was an alternate in 2004. His family says the experience was difficult, but it made him hungrier to be in the boat himself.

Walsh and his crew team didn't get the chance to participate in the opening ceremonies. Since he's competing Saturday in one of the first events, he needed to rest up.
