Sammy's Southport Pizza Benefit
Free Benefit to Help Sammy’s Southport Pizza Recover from Devastating Fire
Friends and customers of Sammy’s Southport Pizza -- who are really the same people -- will gather on Saturday, April 26 at a benefit to help Sammy Palik and his family recover from the devastating fire that destroyed his landmark Southport restaurant on April 14.
The gala community gathering will take place between 9 and 11 a.m. in the Chase Bank parking lot in Southport Center, across the street from where Sammy’s restaurant was a bustling, friendly, family-oriented fixture for 10 years. Admission to the benefit is free.
There will be continuous live music supplied by several local bands and vocal groups. There also will be multiple activities for children, including face-painting and balloon artists, and a bake sale featuring creations by some of the area’s most talented bakers.
A raffle will feature more than 50 prizes donated by the area’s best-known area businesses. The raffle includes gift certificates from all the leading restaurants in the Southport area and many of the area’s finest and most popular stores. There are also gift certificates from many area service providers, including fitness venues, personal grooming salons, cultural institutions and a local decorator.
Sammy plans to rebuild his restaurant and “make it better than ever.” Meanwhile, before insurance payments start, he and his family need help in replacing his lost income and to begin the rebuilding process.
The benefit was put together by a group of neighbors and customers who spontaneously started emailing each other on Monday after the Reverend Laura Whitmore of Southport Congregational Church posted news about the fire on Facebook. It was organized without meetings, committees or titles. As one of the volunteers said, “This is the most spontaneous, organic event I’ve ever been involved with.”

IRS Phone Scam
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
- If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
- If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
- If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
