NORWALK - State Attorney General Blumenthal announced Wednesday that a New York bank lost a tape with information about depositors and investors from People?s United Bank in Bridgeport.

Blumenthal says People?s United gave Bank of New York Mellon information on its depositors and investors so they could be offered an investment opportunity. According to Blumenthal, the Bank of New York lost that tape in February.

Blumenthal says People?s United told his office of the security breach this week.

The attorney general says he has demanded Bank of New York Mellon provide affected consumers with credit monitoring and other identity theft protection measures. According to Blumenthal, the banks are cooperating.

Bank of New York Mellon set up a toll-free number for customers to call at 877-278-3451.
