WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has officiallydeclared that a major disaster occurred when Connecticut was hit bya freak snowstorm last month, downing trees and knocking out powerto hundreds of thousands of customers. The White House announced tonight that Obama hadsigned the declaration, ordering federal aid to help with state andlocal recovery efforts from the storm that hit Oct. 29-30. The federal funding will be made available to state and localgovernments and certain nonprofit organizations in Fairfield,Hartford, Middlesex, New Haven, Tolland and Windham counties. Themoney will help cover the cost of emergency work and the repair andreplacement of facilities damaged by the storm. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said additional disasterdeclarations for Connecticut may be made at a later date.AP wire services contributed to this report
