Official: Safety measures not followed in fatal trench collapse

GREENWICH - A Greenwich fire official says Monday's fatal construction accident at a home undergoing renovations could have been avoided if the construction company had followed certain safety measures.

The accident happened at a home on MacPherson Drive on Monday afternoon.

Police say 27-year-old Eric Chinchilla, of Stamford, died instantly when a concrete slab beneath the front door suddenly gave way.

Assistant Fire Chief Robert Kick says the E. Sosa Construction Company of Stamford should have used plywood and followed other safety measures to prevent the walls of a trench home from caving in.

Police say federal safety inspectors are now investigating the case.
