RIDGEFIELD - State police are investigating after an armed man was fatally shot by a police officer in Ridgefield yesterday.

According to Ridgefield police, officers responded to a call at 423 Ridgebury Road. They say the officers found a man armed with a weapon, and they tried to disarm him. Police say the man raised the weapon, prompting an officer to fire.

The man was taken to Danbury Hospital and was later pronounced dead. Police have not yet released the man's name.

Police say the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute inside an exclusive gated community. A neighbor tells News 12 Connecticut that the home in which the victim lived was in foreclosure.

Neighbors say they are shocked by the shooting due to its close proximity to Newtown.

Officials say the names of the man and the officer will likely be released on Tuesday.
